Psalm 16
“Preserve me, O God: for in thee do I put my trust. O my soul, thou hast said unto the Lord, Thou art my Lord: my goodness extendeth not to thee; but to the saints that are in the earth, and to the excellent, in whom is all my delight. Their sorrows shall be multiplied that hasten after another god: their drink offerings of blood will I not offer, nor take up their names into my lips. The Lord is the portion of mine inheritance and of my cup: thou maintainest my lot."
"The lines are fallen unto me in pleasant places; yea, I have a goodly heritage.I will bless the Lord, who hath given me counsel: my reins also instruct me in the night seasons. I have set the Lord always before me: because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved.Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoiceth: my flesh also shall rest in hope. For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell; neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption. Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fullness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.” Psalm 16:1-11 ESV
Just look at this beautiful and intimate love letter that the psalmist, David, wrote to God. Take note of the tone of the psalm and words used: refuge, good, excellent, delight, portion, pleasant, beautiful inheritance, counsel, glad, rejoice, secure, life, fullness of joy, pleasures forevermore. What kind of mood comes to mind?
There is a definitive tone of peace, harmony and contentment. The psalmist rejoices with his "whole being" - his life revolves around the Lord. The Lord is his Refuge; his ultimate Source of Goodness; his Provider; his Counselor; the One who goes before him; his Security, his Guide; his Joy; his Pleasure.
When your own life lacks peace, harmony and contentment, what is your "default setting"? Where (or who) do you go to for relief? The well-known theologian, John Calvin, said that the human heart is an idol factory. We will start to worship anything that might give us a sense of happiness, however fleeting it may be. So many things come to mind…money, a fancy car or house, social media, movies or series, careers, social status, pornography, food, alcohol, drugs…the list could go on.
The irony of these seemingly "innocent" obsessions is that they demand much more of you than they give. The more addicted you become to these things, the more you will sacrifice to keep these things and, before you know it, it will take hold of your life. The psalmist knew this - "Their sorrows shall be multiplied that hasten after another god…"
The amazing thing about a life given over to God, is that the sacrifice has already been made. Not by us, but by Jesus, through God Himself. There is nothing left for us to do, but to enjoy and bask in the light of God's goodness. Nothing in the whole universe will satisfy us the way God does, no matter what the circumstances. We will not even be abandoned to Sheol (or death) at the end of our lives, but will be resurrected into God's glorious and perfect Kingdom, just as Jesus rose from the dead.
To whom will you turn the next time you feel distressed?

“This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth: But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin. If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. “Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God. For as the sufferings of Christ abound in us, so our consolation also aboundeth by Christ. And whether we be afflicted, it is for your consolation and salvation, which is effectual in the enduring of the same sufferings which we also suffer: or whether we be comforted, it is for your consolation and salvation.” 2 Corinthians 1:3-6 KJV
“Now thanks be unto God, which always causeth us to triumph in Christ, and maketh manifest the savour of his knowledge by us in every place. For we are unto God a sweet savour of Christ, in them that are saved, and in them that perish: To the one we are the savour of death unto death; and to the other the savour of life unto life. “But if any have caused grief, he hath not grieved me, but in part: that I may not overcharge you all. Sufficient to such a man is this punishment, which was inflicted of many. So that contrariwise ye ought rather to forgive him, and comfort him, lest perhaps such a one should be swallowed up with overmuch sorrow. Wherefore I beseech you that ye would confirm your love toward him. For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death. For behold this selfsame thing, that ye sorrowed after a godly sort, what carefulness it wrought in you, yea, what clearing of yourselves, yea, what indignation, yea, what fear, yea, what vehement desire, yea, what zeal, yea, what revenge!
